I Justin Daniel , the organizer, usually start by sharing some great ideas and information I found from various books and then we open the floor to other members to share their ideas.
We tend to focus on topics and genres more so than specific books. There is no lift but our luggage was taken upstairs. Whilst the shower rooms are basic there is a good atmosphere and our room 8 was light with great views of Lake Como. Wifi worked well. If you are coming by car there is free parking and although the roads are narrow delivery trucks could negotiate them easily. Breakfasts are included although there is no cooked option and a very limited selection of cheese and meats.
Cernobbio is a quiet village and luckily the main road does not go through the centre but passes out of sight and earshot on the mountain above. It is a genuine and picturesque village and is a good place for exploring Lake Como. The trattoria is well known for it's food and sitting outside for lunch surrounded by the fragrance of the flowers is a great experience.
The evening menu is not extensive but the quality of the food makes this a destination restaurant for formal dining.
SAGR Book Club - Vignetta in the Red House
We particularly enjoyed the prawns, steak and chocolate desserts. Overall if you want an authentic Italian family trattoria then this fits the bill in an area where you can easily pay high prices. We have been trice and will return. We booked a family room which was perfect: two adjoining rooms with a bathroom and a balcony.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, albeit Spartan.
The old floor tiles added a special ambience to it. The room was very reasonably priced for the location and the style. We highly recommend the restaurant: we found the food well above average: excellence tartare and red house wine. Breakfast was also very good. The staff was very friendly and a kind young man brought all the Lugguage upstairs for us there was no lift , The hotel has its own parking , a bit difficult to access via a narrow road.
The only read issue was the wi-fi connection which we found very, very weak. Firstly, the trattoria is in an awkward location only accessed by little one way streets; a big car would not be ideal. But we eventually found it and it was very pretty. Seating area for the in house restaurant. We were warmly welcomed by the receptionist who spoke good English and gave us our tour of our basic but beautiful room overlooking Lake Como. Surprisingly the Wi-Fi was very fast at night so not all was basic.
The room was as clean as it could be seeing that it was an old traditional Italian building. The bathroom was very clean but a few spiders what do you expect? Sleeping was very comfortable even though we were bitten multiple times by mosquitos. We felt refreshed and went downstairs for a buffet breakfast which was delicious as well. Overall the stay met the needs and left us feeling happy with the choice we made. I would recommend it.
